Our approach in one sentence

We collect the minimum data needed to run this site and serve our readers, we never sell your personal information, and we give you clear controls over what we keep. Preparedness is about trust, and that starts with being honest about data.

What we collect

When you visit The Smart Prepper, we may collect the following types of information:

  • Anonymous usage data. Aggregate page views, device type, and approximate region help us understand which content is useful. This is not linked to your identity.
  • Email address (if you subscribe). If you join the newsletter or waitlist, we store the email you provide and the date and source of your consent. We do not collect your name, home address, or phone number as part of a subscription.
  • Contact form submissions. If you use the contact or corrections form, we store the message you submit so we can review and respond. You choose what to include.
  • Locally saved plans and tools. Data you enter into the prep plan, kit builder, pantry tracker, or other tools is stored in your browser by default. It does not leave your device unless you choose to export it or connect an account.

What we do not collect

We do not ask for your precise location, your medical history, your weapons inventory, or your home security configuration. Region or state is optional in our planning tools and is used only to tailor general guidance — it is not a live hazard assessment. We do not use tracking pixels that follow you across other websites.

How we use your data

  • To deliver the newsletter or ebook updates you requested, and to respond to contact or correction submissions.
  • To understand which guides and tools are most used, so we can improve content. This is aggregate and anonymous.
  • To maintain a record of your consent — when you subscribed, what you agreed to, and what version of our terms was in effect.

We do not sell, rent, or share your email address or personal data with third parties for marketing. We may share data if required by law or to protect the rights, property, or safety of our readers.

Cookies and local storage

We use browser local storage to save your plans, kit lists, and tool progress so you can return to them. This data stays on your device. If you clear your browser storage, that data is removed. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. If we add analytics in the future, it will be aggregate and subject to your consent and browser privacy preferences.

Affiliate links

Some links on this site are affiliate links. When you click one, the retailer may set a cookie to track the referral for commission. We use campaign and placement IDs only as permitted by the retailer's program terms — we do not append parameters that identify you as an individual, and we do not receive your name, email, or purchase details from the retailer. See our Affiliate Disclosure for details.

Your choices

  • Unsubscribe. Every newsletter email includes an unsubscribe link. You can also manage preferences or request removal at any time through the contact page.
  • Erase local data. Each tool includes a reset or clear-data option. Use it to remove your saved plans from your device.
  • Browser privacy settings. You can block cookies and local storage in your browser. Some features may not work without local storage, but reading content always works.
  • Request deletion. Contact us to request deletion of your email or contact submission from our records.

Children's privacy

The Smart Prepper is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with data, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our practices evolve. The "last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be noted on this page.
