Editorial policy

How we research, write, review, and correct the guidance on this site.

Sources

We prioritize credible primary sources: Ready.gov/FEMA, NOAA/NWS, CDC, FDA, USDA and the National Center for Home Food Preservation, EPA, CPSC, recognized training organizations, and manufacturer instructions where appropriate. We store source URLs and verification dates. Competitor articles are never our sole factual source.

Research versus testing

Our gear guides are research-based, not hands-on testing, and we say so plainly. We label the evidence status behind every comparative claim and define the criteria behind it. We never invent test results, photos, or field notes.

Health and safety

We do not give medical advice, medication dosing, or improvised procedures. We point readers toward qualified clinicians, official instructions, and training, and we place limitations beside the relevant advice. Safety-sensitive pieces are held for qualified verification before publication.

Corrections

If we're wrong, we fix it and note it. Use our error-reporting form to flag anything. See our review methodology for research and testing standards.

Independence

Editorial choices are independent of any affiliate commissions. We link because a product fits a need, not because it pays. See our affiliate disclosure.

AI use

We use AI tools to help draft, organize, and summarize — never to verify an emergency, impersonate a professional, or replace official guidance. AI cannot verify your emergency, and we never present it as if it can. Human review stands behind everything we publish.
